More than 500 teddy bears and other stuffies and a donation of $10,000 are headed to the Victoria General Hospital after Shawnigan鈥檚 first-ever Teddy Bear Toss at the U18 Prep boys鈥 ice hockey game against St. George鈥檚 School on Wednesday December 4 鈥 an event that was both heartwarming and a huge success.

A holiday-season tradition at various levels of ice hockey for decades, the Teddy Bear Toss sees fans throw bears and other stuffed toys after the home team scores its first goal. The toys are then donated to a charity 鈥 often a children鈥檚 hospital, where they bring joy and comfort to patients in need.

The U18 Prep boys sported special jerseys for Wednesday鈥檚 game, and the arena was packed with students, staff, families and community members. The U11 girls鈥 team from the Kerry Park Minor Association played a scrimmage between the first and second periods, then assisted in collecting the hundreds of toys on the ice after Nigel Alberts scored Shawnigan鈥檚 first goal.

In an emotional moment before the game, Jeremy Lister, a young cancer patient who is now in remission after two years of treatment at VGH, and Josh Coulson of the VGH Child Life Team joined the Shawnigan players to accept the $10,000 donation. Jeremy joined the players in the locker room after the game, telling them it was the best day of his life.
The team leaders, in particular captain Vincent Croteau and alternate captain Ryan Turner, took charge of the initiative, and the U18 Prep players will be working with the VGH Child Life Team to determine how the donation will be used. Four or five of the players will visit VGH to help distribute teddy bears to patients.

After the success of Shawnigan鈥檚 first Teddy Bear Toss, plans are already in the works for another next year.

“This special game united our School and community in support of sick children,鈥 Director of Hockey Mr. Kevin Cooper said. 鈥淚t was an opportunity to give back, with a heartfelt donation made to the VGH Child Life Team to help provide essential care and support to those in need.”

Shawnigan Lake School鈥檚 Carly Haggard has received the British Columbia BFL Women in Coaching Award in the Competitive Category.

The BFL Female Coach of the Year Awards recognize and honor coaches who exemplify the positive values of hockey and sport, for their successful and outstanding achievements in player development and the leadership of their players and teams, while making outstanding contributions over an extended period of time coaching hockey programs within Hockey Canada female or minor hockey programs.

The Competitive Coach category is defined as a woman coaching athletes who play and compete in divisions where the participants are eligible to compete in National Championships, accredited Sport Schools Championships, or provincially designated Programs of Excellence. (ex. Sport Schools, U15-U18 AAA, U22 Elite).

Haggard, has spent the last eight seasons as the Female U18 Prep head coach for Shawnigan Lake. She was nominated by her assistant coaches, players and athletic director who thought it was important that she was recognized for what she has done for female hockey.

“Coach Carly is someone who is always there for every individual athlete on the team. Not only does she care for you on the ice, but off the ice just as much, if not more. She understands each individual as a unique person and always makes sure that we are okay or in need of help in whatever aspect hockey brings on us,鈥 said Morgan Jackson who spent the last two seasons on the Shawnigan Female U18 Prep team. 鈥淲hether it鈥檚 on the ice, off the ice, your mental side, video, in the gym, etc. She always makes sure everyone is pushing themselves beyond, but always makes sure it鈥檚 with a smile. I am so lucky to have been coached by her, and I know not only do I speak for myself, but for all of the other amazing athletes that have/had the opportunity to be coached by her would say the same.鈥

As the BC BFL Women ins Coaching Award winner, Haggard will receive a $1,000 bursary to further her coaching development.

鈥淚t鈥檚 such an honor to win this award. It was a surprise that鈥檚 for sure. When you get into coaching, you do it because you love it, not for awards, but it鈥檚 feels great to be recognized,鈥 said Haggard.

鈥淚 absolutely love coaching at Shawnigan Lake School. I always say it would be very hard to coach anywhere else as Shawnigan is such a special place. I love the community atmosphere where I get to know the players at such a deeper level. This connection helps me be able to coach them at my best, understanding what makes them tick,鈥 added Haggard. 鈥淭he 泊樂娛樂城app is an amazing league. It always has the players interest at the forefront. The league understands there鈥檚 so much more than hockey.鈥

Haggard joins Brittany Kirby (Delta Hockey Academy, 2022) and Cassea Schols (Okanagan Hockey Academy, 2021) as recent 泊樂娛樂城app recipients of the British Columbia BFL Women in Coaching Award in the Competitive Category.
